Job Summary
The Circulation / Public Services Librarian is responsible for planning, organizing, and supervising the activities of circulation services; oversees library assistants and student workers; assists patrons in the use of library services; interprets library policies for patrons; and coordinates activities with other librarians and service units.

Responsibilities

  • Manages the fulfillment function using the library's integrated system (ALMA)
  • Makes schedules for staff and library assistants assigned to serve at the circulation desk
  • Trains staff and student workers; makes job assignments and verifies that assignments are carried out properly
  • Maintains statistics on circulation activity and provides reports as needed
  • Plays a leadership role in the collaborative development of library policies and strategic plans, assessment, and implements short and long-term operational goals and objectives
  • Provides a high level of customer service
  • Provides oversight under the direction of the University Librarian for library programs, outreach events and public relations activities
  • Serves at the library's reference desk on a daily, weekly, and weekend rotation as scheduled
  • Maintains accurate and detailed records and reporting information
  • Serves as the liaison to one or more academic departments
  • Provides library instruction as needed
  • Serves on university and library committees as assigned or volunteers
  • Participates in local, state, and national library organizations
  • Engages in scholarship and service to the university and the profession
  • May be required to perform job related duties other than those specifically delineated in this position

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Library Information Science from an ALA accredited institution
  • Must have experience managing an integrated library system for circulation and creating reports
  • Must have knowledge of library trends and access services related to circulation
  • Must have experience with circulation and public relations
  • Must have knowledge of digital information sources

Preferred Qualifications

  • Project management skills
  • Strong commitment to public service including reference and research assistance

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Knowledge of all duties related to circulation services including but not limited to charging, discharging, renewing library materials, stack maintenance, and registering and re-registering patrons
  • Ability to resolve circulation-related problems
  • Ability to monitor the daily operation of the library's integrated library system (ALMA)
  • Ability to act as a liaison with GALILEO Interconnected Libraries (GIL) support on circulation matters
  • Ability to work effectively and collegially with a diverse population of students, faculty, and staff in a collaborative environment
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Ability to maintain a positive attitude and high levels of personal commitment
  • Skill in decision making and problem solving
  • Skill in interpersonal relations and in dealing with the public
  • Skill in oral and written communication
