HOWARD UNIVERSITY ELEVATES IN NATIONAL GRADUATE SCHOOL RANKINGS RELEASED BY U.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORT

Howard University's graduate programs in business, education, engineering and social work increased in the annual national rankings released by U.S. News and World Report's "Best Graduate Schools" listing.

"We are extremely proud of the hard work that the faculty and leadership in our graduate programs are doing to enhance their respective programs every year," says President Wayne A. I. Frederick. "To be recognized among our peers by U.S. News and World Report is a testament to the excellent education Howard provides to its students."

Howard University College of Engineering and Architecture (CEA) increased to the top 12 percent of engineering colleges in the nation with a No. 132 ranking. The new ranking marks a 66-point increase over the past three years. CEA Dean Achille Messac, Ph.D., cites a series of transformative, bold initiatives that have begun to show significant results. These have impacted every aspect of college life, which include new faculty and staff hires; student enrollment growth; new leadership at all levels; new successful programs, including a visionary Google Initiative in Computer Science; and greater visibility of faculty achievements of national scope.

"I note that, at No. 132, we are still well below our true standing as a scholarly community, with a mission of national scope. We intend to ascend to No. 100 within the next few years; and thereafter, to place at No. 50 or above," says Dean Messac. "That is who we are, in line with our technical standing and our solemn social mission. We will always keep our doors wide open to those eager to climb the social ladder."

The Howard University School of Social Work ranked No. 30, up eight spots from last year and moving the program within the top 15 percent of programs in the nation. Dean Sandra E. Crewe, Ph.D. attributes the jump to the faculty's increased representation in various national social work organizations serving as presidents, board members and members of editorial boards, among other factors.

"Collectively our faculty members have had over 150 publications in last two years and over 200 presentations globally," says Dean Crewe. "Additionally, we have added two new degree options, MSW/MDIV and MSW/MBA and are planning a MSW/MPH dual degree.  We have recently received three HRSA grants related to student skill-building in behavioral and public health. We have also benefited from stable and innovative leadership and a strong relationship with our alumni and alumni association."

Among the listing's top MBA programs, Howard's School of Business ranked No. 78, following a short absence from the list last year and a rank of 92 in 2017. The School of Business and its award-winning programs were the first AACSB international accreditation business school in the Washington, D.C. area.

"The increase in the recent US News and World reports of the ranking of the Howard University MBA program can be attributed to the increasing reputation of our high-quality MBA program among MBA deans and directors, and corporate representatives, as well as Howard's high career placements of our MBA Graduates," says Dean Barron Harvey, Ph.D.

The graduate program of Howard University School of Education (HUSOE) moved up to No. 105, up 15 places from last year's ratings. HUSOE is a CAEP-accredited provider which features the opportunity to travel abroad for global education experiences, engagement with the Urban Superintendent Academy, and the new Ph.D. program in Higher Education Leadership and Policy Studies.

"We are pleased that the hard work of our faculty and staff continue to be nationally recognized and we look forward to doing more great work in communities around the world," says Dean Dawn Williams, Ph.D.  "The rise also speaks to the accomplishments and impact of our students and alumni."
