CRIMSON TIDE FOOTBALL GREAT AND FORMER DALLAS COWBOYS LINEBACKER LEE ROY JORDAN TO SPEAK AT BISHOP STATE FOUNDATION BENEFIT
Lee Roy Jordan, Crimson Tide Football Hall of Famer and Former Dallas Cowboys Linebacker, will be the guest speaker at the fundraiser banquet of the Bishop State Community College Foundation on Thursday, March 14, at 7 p.m.
The dinner event will take place in the Yvonne Kennedy Auditorium on the Baker-Gaines Central Campus. Tickets are $100 per person and can be purchased at Bishop State Community College Bookstore on the Main Campus at 351 North Broad St. Tickets can also be purchased online at www.bishop.edu. Proceeds from the fundraiser will go toward scholarships to support Bishop State's STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Initiative called EPECS (Engineering, Physics, Economics and Computer Science). Contributions to this event in excess of $30 estimated fair market value are deductible for federal income tax purposes.
Charles White, Chairman of the Foundation, said it is the desire of the Foundation to assist the College in its needs to train and equip students with the math and science skills necessary to enter the workforce or transfer to a four-year college or university. "Bishop State has the potential to become a recognized leader in STEM education in the two-year college system," he said.
Jordan was named the Nation's Outstanding Lineman in 1962. Following that season, he made 31 tackles against Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl. Jordan was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in January 1980, the National College Hall of Fame in December 1983, the Orange Bowl Hall of Fame in 1984 and the Senior Bowl Hall of Fame in January 1988.
In 1987, he received the NCAA Silver Anniversary Linebacker Award given to the outstanding collegiate linebacker of the Class of 1962. This award led to him being a recipient of the coveted NCAA Silver Anniversary Award, which is awarded to only six former student-athletes each year who have distinguished themselves since completing their college athletics careers 25 years ago. His college coach, the legendary Paul "Bear" Bryant, once said of Jordan, "He was one of the finest football players the world has ever seen. If runners stayed between the sidelines, he tackled them. He never had a bad day; he was 100 percent every day in practice and in the games." During his 14 years with the Dallas Cowboys, Jordan competed in three Super Bowl games. He was named All-Pro two times and to the Pro Bowl team five times. He was inducted into the Dallas Cowboys Ring of Honor in 1989. Jordan is currently the president and owner of Lee Roy Jordan Redwood Lumber Company of Dallas,Texas.
