Description
Hampton University invites nominations and applications for the full-time position of Director of the William R. and Norma B. Harvey Library beginning January 2014.  Founded in 1868, Hampton University (www.hamptonu.eduhttp://www.hamptonu.edu) is a nationally recognized HBCU (Historically Black College & University) located on 314 acres of the Tidewater Peninsula.  The historic campus is located adjacent to the Chesapeake Bay in Hampton, Virginia.  It is a privately endowed, co-educational, nonsectarian institution of higher education and all programs are accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the Department of Education of the Commonwealth of Virginia, and the American Council on Education.
The Harvey Library houses a collection of approximately 400,000 monographs along with extensive offerings of periodicals, microforms, and electronic resources.  In 1977, the Federal Government designated Hampton University as a Selective Depository for housing government publications.  The Library is also home to a nationally significant collection on African American Studies.  It supports undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs and serves a student population of 4,623.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Director of the Harvey Library reports to the Provost and is the primary spokesperson for the Library; representing it both locally and nationally at professional activities.  The ideal candidate must be able to:

  •   Develop and implement the strategic goals for the direction of the Library.
    
  •   Manage the daily operations and establish policies, procedures, and objectives for librarians and paraprofessionals under the Director's supervision.
    
  •   Prepare and execute the Library's annual budget.
    
  •   Obtain external funding, especially from national agencies and foundations.
    
  •   Plan for and implement enhancements to existing library technology.
    
  •   Collaborate with faculty to advance student information literacy and understanding of the use of Library and information resources.
    
  •   Forge strong collaborative relationships with campus administrators in order to develop new library initiatives.
    
  •   Establish a work environment that fosters teamwork and highlights the role of the Library in supporting a successful educational experience for Hampton students.
    
  •   Remain current with Library trends and the provision of services to today's Library users.
    

Qualifications
The successful candidate must have the following:

  •   ALA accredited Master's degree in Library and Information Science.
    
  •   A minimum of five years of progressively responsible administration experience in an academic library.
    
  •   Ability to effectively lead and motivate working relationships with associates, supervisors, volunteers, and the public.
    
  •   Ability to work independently.
    
  •   Creativity to develop and implement library programs and services.
