Four Members Inducted into National Honor Society
An ASU honor society inducted new members with encouragement from President Gwendolyn E. Boyd to "be excellent every day."
The Alabama State University Alpha Gamma Psi Chapter of the Pi Sigma Alpha National Political Science Honor Society welcomed four new members to its organization during a ceremony held on April 22.

Founded in 1920, Pi Sigma Alpha is the national political science honor society. It is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies with more than 740 chapters nationwide.

Dr. Dorothy Autrey, chairperson of ASU's department of History and Political Science, congratulated the new inductees and said the program reflects a central focus of the department, which is challenging students to excel in their academic endeavors.

"Induction into the honor society is not the essence of who you are or what you will become in life," Autrey said. "It does not determine your destiny. In fact what determines your future is not what is behind you nor what is before you, but what is within you. What determines your future is what you do with the knowledge and skills you have acquired in your life experiences."

President Gwendolyn E. Boyd delivered the keynote address.

"We congratulate you today for making the wise choice to study hard and to be excellent in all of your classes," Boyd said. "Having the highest GPA is a wonderful attribute to you, to your scholarly endeavors and who you want to be in your life. So, we applaud you for your excellence today. And I encourage you to be excellent every day. Don't choose to be excellent in this moment and not in another. Don't choose to be excellent in one discipline and not in another; but be excellent everywhere you go and in everything that you do because it's a habit not an act. Thank you for lifting Alabama State University to a new level of excellence because that's represented in who you are."

Congratulatory remarks also were presented by Dr. Byrdie A. Larkin, ASU professor and chapter advisor.

Three students and a faculty member were inducted:

Everett C. Averhart
Deidre M. Lewis
Dr. Emmanuel E. Obuah
Amanda Renee' Smith
