Ebony's Power 100 List Contains Numerous Morehouse Connections
Ebony magazine's Power 100 list, which has been revealed in its Dec. 2013/Jan. 2014 edition, includes a number of names with Morehouse connections.
Three Morehouse graduates were on the list - the Rev. Delman L. Coates '95, Otha Thornton Jr. '89 and Jamarlin Martin '00.
Coates is the pastor of Mt. Ennon Baptist Church in Clinton, Md.; Thornton is the first African American male to serve as president of the National Parent Teacher Association; Martin is the CEO of Moguldom Media Group, which includes popular African American gossip site, Bossip.com, and the Hispanic version, Lossip.com.
The most well known member of the Power 100 is an honorary Morehouse graduate who delivered the Commencement address in May 2013 - President Barack Obama.
The Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel's International Hall of Honor has oil portraits hanging of three other Power 100 members: civil rights icon U.S. Rep. John Lewis (Ga.), fellow civil rights activist, the Rev. Al Sharpton; and Michael B. Beckwith, the founder and spiritual director of Agape International Spiritual Center in California.
Acting legend Harry Belafonte, historian Henry Louis Gates and Motown founder Berry Gordy are Candle Award winners who are on the list.
And four individuals: basketball Hall of Famer and businessman Ervin "Magic" Johnson; environmentalist and CNN "Crossfire" co-host Van Jones; education advocate Marian Wright Edelman and comedian/actor Kevin Hart have all been on the Morehouse campus in recent years to speak to students.
