WVSU Receives $34,000 in STEM Grants and Scholarships

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) West Virginia Space Grant Consortium (WVSGC) has awarded $17,000 in funding to West Virginia State University (WVSU) to bolster Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) research. The program requires a 100-percent match from WVSU, meaning a total of $34,000 in grants and scholarships are being awarded to the University's students and scientists.

WVSGC awarded $11,000 in student scholarships and $6,000 in research enhancement grants to scientists at WVSU. The monies will fund STEM-related research projects.

"We are pleased to receive funding from the Consortium to support innovative research by our faculty and students in the STEM disciplines," said Dr. Robert J. Barney, interim dean of WVSU's College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics.

Each student receiving a scholarship this year is new to the program. Students and scientists receiving funding will present their work to constituents at WVSU's annual research symposium next spring.

The WVSGC is a NASA-sponsored organization comprised of 12 West Virginia academic institutions and eight corporate and scientific partners. It is dedicated to building research infrastructure and promoting STEM education in West Virginia. Programs focus on research, collaborations with high-technology industries, student fellowships, as well as K-12 and public outreach programs.
