Voorhees College News September 1, 2015 Voorhees alumni give back to the institution The Alumni Alliance of the White and True Blue (AAWTB) put smiles on eight students' faces at the All College Assembly on Aug. 27, where they distributed book vouchers and laptops to students. During the assembly, a raffle was held for the incoming freshman class, where student names were selected out of a drawing. Six freshmen received book vouchers for $250 to be used at the campus bookstore and two freshmen won laptops. All winners were presented with their checks and computers in front of the stage and given the opportunity to meet some of the people who helped make this all possible. Edward Golden, member of the AAWTB, said he thanks Voorhees College for assisting with this project. "The organization donated the money for one laptop and three vouchers while the institution matched them and provided the other three vouchers and laptops," said Golden. "That is what it is all about, alumni coming together to work with our alma mater for the better." AAWTB is about increasing the alumni presence and participation in all aspects of Voorhees by providing and implementing new innovative ideas to assist with increasing enrollment. AAWTB has partnered with Voorhees College, VC National Alumni Association, local chapters and other alumni for various projects. Previous initiatives the organization sponsored or contributed to within the last 10 months include providing Christmas food baskets to the physical plant staff, sponsoring students to see the "Selma" movie and meet civil rights historians, hosting an alumni and student "Meet and Greet" cookout, and hosting conference calls with several division and departmental chairs and the president of the National Alumni Association to determine how the organization can best serve the college as a whole. AAWTB was founded in the summer of 2014 by a group of Voorhees alumni from all across the United States who joined forces to improve the institution as a whole. The organization has eight core members with the support of more than 45 alumni who provide suggestions and financial assistance. At this time, the organization is currently working on organizing care packages for at least 100 students to be given out at Homecoming weekend, which is Nov. 13 and 14.
