Coahoma Community College News April 18, 2018 CCC MI-BEST Students Achieve Goal Coahoma Community College's Mississippi Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training (MI-BEST) Program kicked off the Spring semester with four students receiving their High School Equivalency Diploma. Sammia Eutsey, Roosevelt J. Whitfield, Devontaye Daniels (all of Clarksdale, MS) and Kartierre Johnson of Merigold, MS were the recipients of GEDs. The Mississippi Community College Board (MCCB), in collaboration with the state's 15 community and junior colleges, seeks to address workforce and education challenges by scaling statewide an integrated career pathway initiative. Mississippi Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training (MI-BEST), primarily targets individuals that didn't finish high school, other nontraditional students and accelerates their transition from basic skills education to postsecondary programs of study. Sammia Eutsey stated that her experiences in the Delta Workforce Development Area (DWDA) and MI-BEST Programs have been positive and she appreciates the assistance she was given. "Ms. Williams and Ms. Coleman show us tough love and push us to want more and do better. After starting the DWDA program, Ms. Griffin came and introduced us to the MI-BEST program which helped us become a part of the college life," said Eutsey. "The instructors opened us up to multiple opportunities; making my experience easier. I was so excited when I received my high school equivalency diploma." Roosevelt Whitfield also enrolled in the DWDA and MI-BEST programs at Coahoma Community College and praised his instructors for the support that they gave. Whitfield stated, "I got in the program to obtain my GED and I have accomplished that goal with guidance from my two instructors and help from the MI-BEST program. I had a great experience at CCC in the DWDA program and being a-part of MI-BEST." "The instructors worked well with me and others who have also obtained their GED. I advise anyone who would like to work towards their GED to go to CCC. The DWDA instructors and MI-BEST program will guide you to greatness," said Whitfield. Mr. Steven Jossell, executive director - Workforce Development, is thrilled to see success in the program and welcomes others to join. "I am genuinely excited and elated for both of these individuals in this milestone of an achievement of successfully completing the requirements of the GED exam. Recognizing that this wasn't a small feat, they are now postured with a solid foundation to build upon," said Jossell. "Also, I extend accolades to each of them for taking the initiative to enroll in the MI-BEST program and utilizing it as a launching pad. This step will catapult them to new beginnings and opportunities for success, personal enrichment, and fulfillment." Chaquina Griffin, career pathway navigator - Workforce Development, is enjoying her new role and hopes to aid future students in attaining their dreams. "As the new MI-BEST Career Pathway Navigator, I am ecstatic to witness the growth and accomplishments of these students. I view myself as a resourceful asset to guide individuals to reach their next level and explore the horizon," said Griffin. "I aspire to inspire. To witness such a major milestone for these young individuals uplifts my spirit. I look forward to continuing to work with each of them and the other students who are a part of the program."
