Clark Atlanta University News December 3, 2014 CAU Receives $250,000 Grant From US Department Of Energy Clark Atlanta University (CAU) received a $250,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to conduct research that advances the safe and environmentally responsible use of fossil fuels, while providing educational and research training opportunities for minority students. Conrad Ingram, Ph.D., principal investigator and CAU associate professor of chemistry, said, "This grant will be a significant catalyst to support our ongoing research in developing new revolutionary chemical adsorbent materials, namely metal organic framework structures, for the efficient capture of the primary greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide (CO2)." Ingram added, "There is currently an urgent need to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide that is released into the atmosphere from power plants, as elevated levels of this greenhouse gas have an adverse effect on global climate. Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is the primary approach that the scientific and engineering community is pursuing to address this problem, and ideal adsorbent materials with high storage capacity are urgently needed. This research grant will not only allow us to develop the science and materials toward addressing this challenge to advancement in fossil fuels utilization, but will allow us to significantly enhance our existing capabilities for training the next generation of scientists in areas of national interest." The U.S. Department of Energy issued grants to three historically black universities under its Support for Advanced Fossil Resource Utilization Research program. The other universities are Delaware State University and Prairie View A&M University. SANDRA M.
