Land Grant Program Personnel Secure Many Grants
The Kentucky State University Land Granthttp://www.kysu.edu/landGrant/ staff has been busy this spring and summer acquiring grants for research and outreach projects. Below is a listing of some of the recently awarded grants.
The National Institute of Food and Agriculture http://www.csrees.usda.gov/ awarded several grants to KSU personnel. NIFA is one of four U.S. Department of Agriculturehttp://www.usda.gov agencies that make up its research, education and economics mission. The aim is to provide federal leadership in creating and disseminating knowledge spanning the biological, physical and social sciences related to agricultural research, economic analysis, statistics, extension and higher education. NIFA's unique mission is to advance knowledge for agriculture, the environment, human health and well-being and communities by supporting research, education and extension programs in the Land-Grant University System and other partner organizations.
Dr. Marion Simon and Dr. Kenneth Andries received $187,914 for Management Education for Goat and Sheep Producers in a Bearish Economy.
Dr. Marion Simon, Dr. Terry Gipson (Langston University), Dr. Roger Merkel (Langston University) and Dr. John Fernandez (University of Guam) earned $300,000 for Enhancing Production Capabilities of Socially Disadvantaged and Underserved Farmers via Low-Literacy Meat Goat Production Materials.
Dr. Kristopher Grimes was awarded $200,000 for a Kentucky State University Center For Family Nutrition and Wellness Education. The project is scheduled to begin on Sept. 1.
Dr. Kirk Pomper was awarded $300,000 for A Mobile Kitchen for Fruit and Vegetable Processing Training and Extension Initiatives for Pawpaw and Sorghum Syrup.
Other awarded grants focused on sustainability education.
Dr. Marion Simon, Louie Rivers Jr., Dr. Michael Bomford, Nancy Calix, Edwin Chavous, Tehran Jewell and Harold Eli of the Kentucky State University Land Grant Program recently were awarded a $400,000 U.S. Department of Agriculture Office of Advocacy and Outreach grant to implement the Outreach and Assistance to Socially Disadvantaged Farmers and Ranchers Program: Food Safety in a Changing Economy for Socially Disadvantaged Small, Limited-Resource Farmers.
Dr. Marion Simon, Louie Rivers Jr., Dr. Kenneth Andries and Edwin Chavous of the KSU Land Grant Program won a $31,000 grant from the Foreign Animal and Zoonotic Disease Defense Center to create species specific emergency response teams.
Dr. Marion Simon, Louie Rivers Jr., Dr. Beth Hunter of Cardinal Hill and John Hancock of the University of Kentucky received a $180,000 grant as part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's AgrAbility Initiative to enhance the Kentucky AgrAbilityhttp://ces.ca.uky.edu/agrability/ program.
Dr. Marion Simon and Dr. Ray Mobley of Florida A&M University received $85,000 from Southern SARE-PDPhttp://www.southernsare.uga.edu/ to help fund the National Goat Conference.
The Kentucky Governor's Office of Agricultural Policyhttp://agpolicy.ky.gov/ and the Kentucky Cabinet for Energy and Environmenthttp://www.eppc.ky.gov granted Dr. Michael Bomford and Dr. Marion Simon $5,000 for the Kentucky State University Sustainable Farms, Families, and Farm Energy Field Day.htthttp://organic.kysu.edu/TTTSchedule.shtml
