Making a Difference Through Scientific Discovery at Bowie State
New STEM Research Brochure Published
(BOWIE, Md.)-Bowie State University continues to work steadily toward becoming a leading research institution in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The outstanding work of distinguished faculty and talented students take center stage in a recently published brochure that describes the STEM programmatic and research opportunities at Bowie State.
"This brochure both celebrates the work we are doing at Bowie State University and reveals our commitment to collaborative research with our professional and academic colleagues locally, nationally, and internationally," stated Dr. Mickey L. Burnim, president of Bowie State University. "We hope it will contribute to our constituencies' knowledge and understanding of our work in the STEM areas and foster more networking opportunities for faculty and students."
Much of the university's STEM research and teaching programs are concentrated in three departments - Natural Science, Computer Science, and Mathematics-where faculty from diverse backgrounds and professional experiences excel in teaching and research. Several Bowie State faculty members have secured patents for their innovations, while the works of others have been commercialized.
"Most of our faculty depend almost entirely on grants to fund their research," stated Dr. Stacey Franklin Jones, provost and vice president for academic affairs. Many of the funding sources include private industry and federal agencies such as the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Security Agency (NSA), and the Department of Defense (DOD).
Researchers in each department, where feasible, are organized into teams. The new brochure features faculty research capabilities in the STEM programs and emphasize the work of some of the most productive and outstanding programs at the university.
"This brochure will serve as a vital tool to help people navigate and better understand what Bowie State offers in STEM research," said Dr. George Acquaah, dean of the college of arts and sciences. "The more people discover what makes BSU so special, the more they will want to partner with us on research initiatives."
