Subject: Story Selection for Publications

Hi Sandra,

I hope that this message finds you well.  After giving it some thought, I'm recommending that the American Libraries article focus on the University of the Virgin Islands and the Atlanta University Center.  Given American Libraries editor's stressing of the fact that they wanted an article that would appeal to all libraries - whether academic, public, school, or special - these two institutions' libraries are the best fit due to their focus on communications and meeting patrons' needs (respectively).  After my interviews and site visits at the nine libraries, thoughtful consideration resulted in choosing these two stories for the American Libraries not only for their focus and broad applicability, but also because they are particularly compelling and inspiring, which is important especially given the difficult economic climate that libraries and higher education currently face.

All stories were inspiring and noteworthy in their own way.  I enjoyed interviewing and/or visiting library staff and faculty at Claflin University, Delaware State University, Fayetteville State University, Savannah State University, Southern University at Baton Rouge, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, and Virginia State University.  From archival preservation, to collaborative spaces, to technological advancements, each library had a unique and valuable story to tell.  These seven stories will be published in Against the Grain.

It is my hope that all stories will highlight the important work that HBCU Libraries and the HBCU Library Alliance is doing to transform libraries, institutions of higher education, the field of librarianship.  Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you,

Shanesha
