HU Appoints Federal Relations Officer
Hampton, Va. -In order to be more actively engaged with federal legislation and developments affecting research and higher education, Hampton University has appointed Stephanie M. Phillips as the federal relations officer.
Based in the Washington D.C. area, Phillips will represent Hampton University at meetings with federal agency officials and congressional staff. Phillips is responsible for identifying, analyzing, monitoring and the timely reporting of new and emerging federal funding opportunities.
"Ms. Phillips will cultivate relationships with federal officials to facilitate the development of new funding opportunities aligned with the strengths, capacity and priorities of Hampton University," said HU Provost Dr. Pamela V. Hammond. "She is our voice in Washington."
Phillips most recently worked for the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). In her time with the Initiative she work with various federal agency representatives while performing in-depth research such as analyzing federal agency contributions to HBCUs, assessing enrollment trends and summarizing new federal grant and contract opportunities available to HBCUs. Her unique work experience coupled with her intellectual capital will assist Hampton University in achieving a greater presence in Washington.
"I am very excited to be a part of the Hampton University family and look forward to continuing its legacy of academic excellence while strengthening our relationships at the federal and congressional level," Phillips said.
Phillips is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in Higher Education Administration at the College of Education at the University of Texas at Austin (UT). She earned the Bachelor of Arts and Master of Science degrees in social work from Texas Southern University and UT, respectively.
