Bethune-Cookman University News September 2018 Associate Provost Presents at National Assessment Conference B-CU Associate Provost Adrienne Cooper, Phd, served as a presenter during the HBCU Roundtable at the Annual Drexel University Assessment Conference on Wednesday, September 12, 2018, at Drexel University in Philadelphia. The topic of the HBCU Roundtable was Partnerships with Research Intensive Institutions to Foster Sustainable Research Communities at HBCUs. Since HBCU colleges and universities have historically served as access portals for a diverse set of first-generation students, participants were able to capitalize on the accumulated wealth of experience and commitment in a joint dialogue focused on the state of the HBCU institution. "We had a robust discussion that touched on critical challenges of research sustainability at HBCUs and identified concrete strategies to advance the research agenda," said Cooper. "We have taken the first steps toward mutually beneficial partnerships and I am excited about the opportunities they present for B-CU students and faculty." Roundtable participants explored ways to focus on the most pressing issues of the day, such as marketing and the development of alternative streams of revenue from tuition and fees, especially for the private HBCUs. Also discussed were ways in which partnerships and the value of those partnerships to both the HBCU and the partnering institution can be formed in which HBCU presidents and provosts can establish relationships with institutions for graduate study, faculty exchange, and to engage and focus on an interest of HBCUs to piggyback on international studies programs to expand those opportunities for students and faculty alike.
