SUNO Receives $2.4 million Federal Education Grant

Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) has received a five-year U.S. Department of Education grant totaling $2.4 million to fund the Student Support Services TRiO Program.

The Student Support Services Program is designed to increase academic performance, retention, and graduation rates of eligible SUNO students. The students are selected for the program based on certain federal guidelines regarding family income, parents' educational background, disability, and/or need for academic support.

According to SUNO Director of Student Support Services Linda D. Frederick, who wrote the grant and serves as the principal investigator, the TRiO Program offers the following services: academic advising, course selection, instruction in the College Survival Skills Course, group and personal coaching, tutoring, academic workshops, assistance with admission to graduate school, financial and economic literacy sessions, assistance in completing FAFSA, cultural enrichment activities, grant aid, peer mentoring, VIP (Very Involved Peers) student organization, career assessment and more.
