Sandra DeLoatch Named NSU Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs
Norfolk, Va.- Sandra DeLoatch has been named interim provost and vice president for Academic Affairs. In this capacity, she will be responsible for overseeing the Division of Academic Affairs and maintaining academic quality throughout the university. A national search for a permanent Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs will be launched this fall.
"Dr. DeLoatch's highly successful background as a teacher, scholar, department chair and academic dean significantly qualifies her to assume the role of Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs," said NSU President Tony Atwater. "She has my full confidence in successfully directing and advancing the academic enterprise at Norfolk State University."
For more than 30 years, DeLoatch has served NSU. She was responsible for initiating the university's Computer Science program and served as its first department chair. In 2000, she was appointed Dean of the College of Science, Engineering, and Technology. Under her leadership, efforts have been made to establish the College as a science and technology powerhouse. These efforts include: vigorous recruitment initiatives that have produced substantial enrollment increases; expanding graduate program offerings including NSU's first Ph.D. program in the sciences; establishing specialized tutoring and mentoring programs to help improve graduation and retention rates; and securing funding to help modernize classrooms and research laboratories currently used by College faculty.
DeLoatch has effectively administered more than $20 million in external funding for research and educational projects from agencies such as the Department of Energy (DoE), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, National Science Foundation, Department of Education, NASA Langley Research Center, Department of Defense, and Army Corps of Engineers. She was recently awarded funding from DoE to establish a Massie Chair of Excellence in Information Assurance and Cyber Security at NSU, a position she will hold for at least three years. In addition, DeLoatch is currently leading several funded projects that focus on advancing the participation of minorities and women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines. She has authored mathematics textbooks and computer science research articles, and technical reports.
She holds a Ph.D. from Indiana University, an M.A. degree from the University of Michigan, an M.S. degree from The College of William and Mary, and a B.S. degree from Howard University.
