Hampton University News April 25, 2014 Spratlen family donates additional gift to HU nursing school The Hampton University School of Nursing (SON) recently received a $25,000 donation to create an endowed scholarship in the name of the nursing class of 1954. Members of that class included Dr. Lois Price Spratlen, who upon her death in 2013, left over $1 million to the SON<http://news.hamptonu.edu/release/HU-Alumna-Donates-%241-million-to-School-of-Nursing>. Her husband, Dr. Thaddeus H. Spratlen, provided the funding to establish the scholarship in honor of his beloved wife. "The Nursing Class of 1954 Endowed Scholarship fulfills one of the goals of giving back to Hampton that Lois Price Spratlen wanted to share with her classmates. In a Feb. 23, 2012 letter to them, she urged all of them to join her in supporting the scholarship," he said. "Thanks to the generosity of Lois and some of her classmates, the Nursing Class of 1954 will be remembered for giving back to Hampton in a way that can be sustained over time." Once the scholarship is available, an applicant must be a full-time, second- or third-year nursing student at HU, and selection will be based on academic merit and financial need. With continued eligible academic performance, the scholarship award may be renewable for one additional year. The University's Office of Student Financial Aid shall determine financial need. "The continued generosity of the Spratlen family is extraordinary," said Dr. Deborah E. Jones, the HU SON Dean.
