HISTORY PROGRAM TO BE REACTIVATED

Jefferson City, MO- Lincoln University will once again offer undergraduate degrees in history. Under the History Department's Reactivation Plan, which is a redesign of the programs that were recommended for deactivation in July 2016, the university will offer Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in History, with concentrations in public history, research and writing and middle/high school education, beginning in the Fall 2017 semester.

In developing the plan, department leadership and faculty collaborated with outside consultants, including history faculty at other institutions, to revamp the program.  The plan aims to meet the changing needs of history as an academic discipline, as well as the needs of the university's diverse student body. Students following the public history track will matriculate easily to careers in historic preservation, archival management and museum curatorship. The concentration in education will provide students with targeted coursework in social sciences, and will meet requirements for the 9th to 12th Grade Education Certification, following successful completion of state exams.  The research and writing concentration is suggested for those students interested in pursuing a graduate degree.

As the programs were reevaluated, so was the curriculum.  Courses have been refocused and will now bring more modern strategies to teach historical principles, including greater use of today's technology. Syllabi will stress the in-depth relevance of course content. In addition, the plan includes creating internships and career opportunities with state and local governmental agencies and private interests locally, as well as better data maintenance of alumni of the history program.
