North Carolina Central University News October 2017 NCCU Intellectual Property Institute Workshop on Nov. 4 Calling all composers, designers, inventors, scientists and engineers - or anyone with creative output they wish to protect. North Carolina Central University's School of Law is hosting an Intellectual Property Mini-Conference Nov. 4 from 9 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. at the Albert L. Turner Building on campus. Attorneys and staff from the Intellectual Property Law Institute at NCCU will offer information and strategies to help protect creative work of all types. Co-sponsors of the event include NCCU's Departments of Theater and Dance, Biology, Art, Chemistry and Biochemistry the, Jazz Studies Program, the School of Business, and others. Sessions being offered are: Cryptocurrency and Cybersecurity; Copyright for Artists, Writers, Musicians and Performers; Trademarks and Branding for Business Owners; Patents, Innovation and Entrepreneurship; Start-ups in the Trenches, and more. Event tickets are $10 for professionals. Conference attendance is free for students. The public is invited to attend. "We expect to see interest from most departments across campus, including STEM majors, technology creators, artists, jazz studies majors, chemistry majors and more," said Alicia Dawn Williams, patent attorney and a fellow at the IP Institute. Students from area high schools are also invited, Williams said. "We want people to know that if they are a creator or a designer or inventor, their work needs to be protected," she added. "If you have a patent or copyright, it's harder for someone to steal your work because you can prove its yours." Along with important information, the event will provide an opportunity to meet and mingle with other creators, small business owners, artists, writers and more.
