Voorhees College News June 16, 2017 Voorhees computer science majors study at Sandia National Labs at Lawrence Livermore National Lab Three Voorhees College computer science majors have been selected for Information Technology (IT) summer internships in Albuquerque, N.M. and Livermore, Calif. Joshua Russ is completing a summer internship as a Consortium Enabling Cybersecurity Opportunities and Research (CECOR) scholar for Sandia National Laboratories. Sandia National Laboratories is a company that delivers essential science and technology to resolve the nation's most challenging security issues. Russ will conduct large scale analyses to understand infrastructure interdependencies and guide efforts to improve resiliency. He will also gain first-hand knowledge by working with technology to prevent disruption of service while enhancing recovery in vital cyber system. In addition, Russ will focus on working with U.S. government agencies to ensure the integrity and availability of the nation's cyber infrastructure. The process will require him to enhance preparedness, protect, respond, recover, mitigate, and facilitate widespread commercialization of laboratory technologies by the private sector. Stayce Greene and Frederick Keenan have been accepted at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory as a part of the laboratory's Intelligence Program. For more than 60 years, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place by ensuring the safety, security and reliability of the nation's nuclear deterrent. The laboratory's Intelligence Program delivers comprehensive analysis, policy and operational support in areas where technology research and development are critical to national strategic priorities. Greene and Keenan will be involved in mapping networks for cyber defense, operating the software development program called "Get Their Hack On," developing lightweight optics for space, launching traffic cameras into space, finding data needles in gigabit haystacks, and developing operational planning tools. Chief Information Technology Officer Monterrio Jones, said he is always excited when students in the Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) program have an opportunity to learn outside of Voorhees. "Russ, Greene, and Frederick will develop a better understanding of processes working with IT, cyber security, and computer software," Jones said.
