Maryland Historically Black Colleges win $12.2M in grants
by Jack Lambert, Researcher/Reporter

The U.S. Department of Education has awarded more than $12.2 million in grants to Coppin State University, Morgan State University, University of Maryland Eastern Shore and Bowie State University. The grants will be awarded to the state's Historically Black Colleges over the next five years. The money will go toward strengthening "academic resources, management capabilities, and infrastructure," according to a joint statement by U.S. Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski and U.S. Sen. Ben Cardin, both Maryland Democrats.

Here's a breakdown of the grants:

  • $3.9 million for Morgan State University for tutoring and counseling programs, building an endowment, providing job-training in underrepresented disciplines, faculty development and community outreach.
  • $3 million for Bowie State University to help close the achievement gap for first-generation college students, increase enrollment and implement a plan to enhance educational offerings.
  • $2.8 million for Coppin State University to strengthen retention and graduation rates, improve academic programming, and increase minority participation in fields of science, technology, nursing, information technology and geography.
  • $2.5 million for University of Maryland Eastern Shore for building access to high quality values-based education, recruitment and retention, engagement in research and development and closing the achievement gap.
