Voorhees College News October 17, 2018 Voorhees hosts a DNA research presentation Denmark, S.C.- Voorhees College will host "Finding Your Roots: The Voorhees Edition," during the All-College Assembly on Thursday, October 25 at 11 a.m. in the Massachusetts Hall Auditorium. Finding your Roots is a presentation on understanding genealogy and DNA research and ancestral libation. DNA results will be revealed of members of the Voorhees family who tested including President W. Franklin Evans, cabinet members, Miss Voorhees College 2018, Student Government Association (SGA) president, and other faculty, staff, and students. The first guest speaker will be Melvin Collier, genealogist and author of "Mississippi to Africa," "A Journey of Discover," "150 Years Later: Broken Ties Mended," and "Ealy Family Heritage: Documenting Our Legacy." In addition, Naja Chinyere Njouku, founder of DNA Tested African Ancestors, will serve as the second guest speaker. Books and DNA kits will be given away at this event. Rev. Dr. Herman "Skip" Mason, director of library services and assistant professor, said this project corresponds with October being National Family History Month. "As an initiative of the Wrights Potts Library and because of my life-long love and passion for genealogy, we have initiated the Voorhees College Ancestry DNA Project, for members of the Voorhees family to learn more about their history and how to research it," Mason said. President Evans said he was interested in the opportunities that African Americans could discover about who they are and where they came from. "To understand your family history is inspiring and motivating for your future. The results assist in tracing medical conditions, family stories, historical events, ownership, and establishing a sense of identity," Evans said. According to AncestryDNA.com, AncestryDNA has more than two times the geographic detail than any other DNA tests to connect individuals in over 350 regions. This event is free and open to the public.
