Dillard to Partner with St. Augustine High School to Host Black Male Summit Event set for Monday, October 13 in Dent Hall

On Monday, October 13, from 9 to 11 a.m., Dillard University is partnering with St. Augustine High School to host a Black Male Summit in Dent Hall on Dillard's campus. In view of the recent incidents in Florida, Missouri, New York, and other areas of the country involving law enforcement and black males, the summit will provide an opportunity for officials and students to have face-to-face conversations about the broader issues impacting black male success in New Orleans and beyond.

"For the past few years our nation has witnessed high profile tragedies involving Black men, like Trayvon Martin and now, Mike Brown," said Walter Kimbrough, president of Dillard. "Black men have had a complex history with not only law enforcement, but each other. So we hope this forum can be a way to improve these relationships so that we can avoid unarmed Black men from being killed, by anyone," Kimbrough added.
In addition to Dillard and St. Augustine High School, Mayor Mitch Landrieu is lending support to this initiative by participating as a panelist and as part of NOLA FOR LIFE, a comprehensive strategy to reduce the murder rate in the city.
"Since taking office in 2010, we made changing the culture of violence our top priority," said Mayor Landrieu. "Through NOLA FOR LIFE, we are implementing a strategy that focuses on prevention and helping young people in our city succeed. We value and recognize the importance of young black males to the future of New Orleans. Chief Harrison and I are committed to improving interactions with the NOPD and providing pathways to prosperity."
The summit will feature a panel of local officials and experts who will engage in a dialogue with young African American and minority males regarding the challenges and misconceptions that exist among law enforcement, black males, and the community at large.
Panelists include: Mayor Mitch Landrieu, Interim Superintendent of Police Michael Harrison, Criminal Court Judge Benedict Willard, Sheriff Marlin Gusman, and Dr. Robert Collins, professor of Urban Studies at Dillard University.
This event is free and open to the public. Seats are on a first come basis. For more information visit www.dillard.eduhttp://www.dillard.edu/ or call 504.816.4800tel:504.816.4800.
