Project Description: Digitizing the NMNH Two‐Dimensional Materials for Greater
Electronic Access through Rapid Capture
The National Anthropological Archives, Smithsonian Institution, is offering a paid
internship in its Digital Imaging Program during the summer of 2013. The NAA operates
one of the Smithsonian's most successful imaging programs, having produced more
than 300,000 high-resolution images of photographs and artwork from its collections.
Digitizing the NMNH Two‐Dimensional Materials for Greater Electronic Access through
Rapid Capture is a project that will establish methods that can be applied to the
extensive textual documentary materials throughout the Smithsonian’s National
Museum of Natural History (NMNH). The project will be sited within the National
Anthropological Archives (NAA), which has a well-established digital imaging program
and has already begun exploring methods and issues in rapid capture. The goal is to
define issues, test methods, and develop guidelines that can be applied throughout
NMNH as well as in other parts of the Smithsonian. This pilot project will include
materials that are primary objects in themselves and materials that are most important
as documentation for other collection items, and will cover a range of formats from small
cards to bound volumes to oversized maps. This effort will serve as a prototype model
that will make a large volume of two‐dimensional analog material electronically
accessible through Smithsonian online catalogs and websites.

Under the supervision of the Digital Imaging Manager, the intern will gain hands-on
experience in the technical aspects of digital image creation (overhead digital camera
capture) while learning about imaging standards, image data and its preservation and
storage, technical and embedded metadata, digital asset management, and project
management. Specific tasks include: digital camera capture; file processing; metadata
creation; creation of multi-page pdfs; and digital asset management.

Qualifications:
Graduate students (or recent graduates within 6 months of graduation date) in archives
or imaging programs who are interested in digital technologies as applied to archival
care and management of historical collections.
Deadline: March 15th, 2013 Stipend: $2600.00
The internship is located at the National Anthropological Archives,
Smithsonian Institution Museum Support Center (MSC), 4210 Silver Hill Road,
Suitland, MD 20746. Please submit a cover letter describing your qualifications and
interest, resume, and contact information for three references to Stephanie Christensen
