Diverse Issues in Higher Education September 13, 2011 Enrollment on the Rise at Grambling State University GRAMBLING La. - Grambling State University's preliminary enrollment report for the 2011-12 academic year shows enrollment has risen to 5,207, a 4.27 percent increase from the previous academic year. Starting his second year as president at Grambling, The News-Star reports that Frank G. Pogue is on track to meet one of the 10 priorities set for the university. By 2015 Pogue and his administration plan to increase GSU's enrollment to 7,500 students. "The increase is welcomed news because it is the best indicator that students and parents value the quality of education Grambling provides," Pogue said. "It is a clear signal that the strength of our fully accredited academic programs and our highly competent faculty who are deeply committed to excellence and to maintaining a student centered learning environment." "Grambling State University has a goal to increase its undergraduate and graduate enrollment from 4,900 to 7,500 students in the next five years. From all indications, we are moving toward achieving our enrollment goals," Pogue said. Provost and vice president for Academic Affairs, Connie Walton, attributed the growth "to utilizing a team approach." "Faculty and staff worked with our admissions/recruitment team to convert the prospective student to a registered student," Walton said. "During the 2010 academic year, we reviewed our transfer student admissions policy. We revised the policy so that it supported a seamless transfer of community college students to Grambling State University. "The partnership that we entered into with Bossier Parish Community College last year resulted in our getting our first cohort of students this fall." During this year's spring and summer sessions, 119 students were admitted to GSU who attended BPCC. This fall 81 BPCC students were eligible for admission to GSU. SANDRA M.
