Coppin State University Partners with New Psalmist Baptist Church

Coppin State University School of Management Science and Economics (SMSE) is partnering with New Psalmist Baptist Church to hold classes for degree and non-degree seeking students on the church's campus. Courses are tentatively scheduled to start in the fall of 2012 and a team from the church and university is currently collecting data to gauge the needs and interests within the congregation.

"This is a unique relationship," states Dr. Ronald C. Williams, chair of the Department of Management and Marketing. "The church is strategically located in a business park that gives us a reach into the business community, the people who attend the church every Sunday, as well as the surrounding communities where residents can take advantage of the educational opportunity."

New Psalmist Baptist Church is located in the Seton Business Park, 6020 Marian Drive, Baltimore, MD 21215, and has approximately 7,000 members.

Educating the community about the importance of finances is a focus for New Psalmist Baptist Church, helmed by Bishop Walter S. Thomas and the university. "The church is focusing on faith and family finances which include affordable educational opportunities," says Dr. Williams. "Partnering with New Psalmist provides a tremendous opportunity to tie into the vision of Bishop Thomas."

Dr. Williams adds that the school will hold admission and financial aid workshops for prospective students at the church. Students must be admitted using Coppin State University admission criteria in order to take advantage of the program.

"The collaboration between the School of Management Science and Economics and the New Psalmist Baptist Church is the link we need to help build our communities," states Dr. Sadie Gregory, dean of the School of Management Science and Economics.
