Under One Roof Housing Conference
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the senior population is expected to more than double between now and the year 2050. By 2050, it is projected that one in five Americans could be 65-years-old or older. This number suggests an overall senior population totaling 80 million persons.
In an effort to educate caregivers, housing professionals and the general public, Fort Valley State University's Cooperative Extension Program will host the 10th Annual Under One Roof Housing Conference themed Seniors: The New Majority. The conference will take place at the C. W. Pettigrew Farm and Community Life Center on Feb. 25 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
"Seniors are often an audience that is overlooked, ignored or neglected," said Keishon Thomas, FVSU's housing specialist and chair of the housing conference committee. She said the goal of the conference is to help caregivers learn how to better serve seniors and to educate the attendees about issues that will affect their clients and loved ones.
During the conference, participants can attend breakout sessions on topics such as Medicare 101, Fall Prevention, Exposing the Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of the Elderly, Assistive Technology, Caregiving 101 and Reverse Mortgages Hazardous or Helpful. Sessions will be taught by representatives from governmental agencies, university officials and business professionals.
There will also be a general session with keynote speaker Edward Jennings Jr., U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, region IV regional administrator. In addition to Jennings, Dr. Joe Leonard Jr., U.S. Department of Agriculture assistant secretary for civil rights will provide the luncheon speech.
