Howard Faculty Member Named Among Six 2016 ASCE/NCS Centennial Engineers of the Month

Dr. Efimba, Sc.D., P.E., M.ASCE, joined the Howard University civil engineering faculty in 1975 and became an associate professor in 1982, specializing in structural engineering, mechanics and design. He was a governor (2011-2014), and serves as webmaster and coordinator of student affairs in the American Society of Civil Engineers' Region 2 that includes Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware and the National Capital Area.

He is also a registered professional engineer and a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he received his four degrees in civil engineering, structural engineering and structural mechanics: bachelor's (1963), master's (1965), professional (1969), and the Doctor of Science (1972); and served an eight-year term as a member of the MIT Corporation Visiting Committee for the MIT Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering from 1993 to 2001.

Additionally, Dr. Efimba is a member of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE); a life member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and a past president of the National Capital Section, and a recipient of its Meritorious Service Award; a life member of the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) and a past president of the Northern Virginia Chapter. He is also a past president of the Washington Society of Engineers, and a recipient of its highest award, the WSE award; and a past president of the DC Council of Engineering and Architectural Societies, and was honored in February, 2013 with the Council's Lifetime Achievement Award.

The National Capital Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), a professional society for civil engineers, was founded in 1852. The organization represents 130,000 members of the civil engineering profession worldwide, and is America's oldest national engineering society.
