Good Afternoon Sandra,
In case you haven't heard this is a legitimate gift. I spoke with Eileen this afternoon wanted to make sure that it is shared with all HBCUs. Mellon continues to be a very giving friend of HBCUS. I can't think of a faster way for all of the librarians to get the message than through the listserv.
Thanks,

Dear Clarice P. Medley Weeks,
A Mellon grant to libraries of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) was just awarded, allowing me to send you this wonderful gift of an online collection at no charge! But you must reply to accept, so please read on.
Alexander Street Press has partnered with LA Theatre Works to create on online streaming audio collection for academic institutions. It's called Audio Drama: The L.A. Theatre Works Collection. You've perhaps seen it reviewed in the library literature. Students and instructors can listen to hundreds of top productions ranging from classics to contemporary award-winning works, acted by esteemed figures from around the world, and professionally produced specifically for listening.
The Mellon Foundation has agreed to pay for the collection to be given as a free gift to the libraries of the HBCUs. The gift gives you unlimited online usage. This is a one-time gift of perpetual access. LA Theatre Works negotiated with Mellon for months to win the grant. Alexander Street's contribution is to charge absolutely no Web access fees now or ever.
So you'll have this wonderful collection of more than 300 plays activated for all your faculty, students, and staff-with absolutely no strings attached and no costs at all. Access is either on campus or from remote locations through a proxy server. There's no limit to simultaneous users.
All you have to do, by Mellon Foundation rules, is to opt in. Please reply to this message to accept. We must have your reply by the end of the week!
Audio Drama is a terrific way to let students listen to hundreds of classic and contemporary dramatic productions. Listening has been shown to add to students' understanding of plays they may be studying in writing. You can read more about Audio Drama herehttp://alexanderstreet.com/products/radr and learn about the LA Theatre Works educational mission herehttp://latw.org/buttons/about%20us/about-latw.html.
I'm so thrilled to bring you this news, and I urge you to reply immediately to accept. Either click "reply" to this email or click on the link below, and say "yes we accept" in the message. Alexander Street will then contact you for IP information. That's all you do!

I wish to echo the message provided by Clarice. Yes the offer is legitimate, I spoke with the Program Officer who supports our HBCU's and it is indeed a gift from the Mellon Foundation. Individually (and collectively) we may want to track usage in the event a question is raised in the future. For example, as Bloomberg and UNCF, are now doing with regard to the gifted terminals and Bloomberg access granted to some of our schools in 1994.
Take care
