WJSU is providing live floor coverage from GOP, Democratic national conventions
[GINA:L.A. BYLINE]
For the first time ever in station history, WJSU-FM at Jackson State University gained full official credentials to broadcast live this week and next week at the Republican and Democratic national conventions, respectively.
The station previously covered the presidential forums four years ago, but this time it's slightly different because the NPR affiliate, which is currently celebrating its 40th year of broadcasting, will be actually on the floor of the conventions in Cleveland and Philadelphia.
WJSU received its license to broadcast June 2, 1976. Its anniversary celebration began with coverage June 3-4 at the Steel City Jazz Festival in Birmingham - one of the top smooth musical extravaganzas in the nation.
Throughout the year, WJSU plans to commemorate its milestone with other community activities and live broadcasts throughout the country.
"The Full Spectrum"
On Monday, Dwain Doty, host of the award-winning news magazine "The Full Spectrum," which airs from 4 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Thursdays, anchored from Cleveland at the Republican National Convention.
'I'm so fortunate to have a team that can handle the pressures of a live remote broadcast from one of the largest stages in the world.' - WJSU general manager, Gina Carter-Simmers.

One of his first guests was noted journalist Jeff Greenfield, who said he did not agree with some colleagues who compared this year's forum to the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, when tens of thousands of Vietnam War protesters battled police in the streets.
Doty's other guests this week have included Ken Rudin, national host of "Political Junkie" and hosts and executives from "The Young Turks Network." Also scheduled this week is RNC committeeman Henry Barbour and Mississippi Republican chairman Joe Nosef.
WJSU general manager Gina Carter-Simmers, said, "Planning a live broadcast doesn't happen overnight. This took months of planning, trial runs and technical testing. I'm so fortunate to have a team that can handle the pressures of a live remote broadcast from one of the largest stages in the world."
Seasoned journalist
Furthermore, Carter-Simmers said, "I'm especially proud of Dwain, who has secured some really great interviews in Cleveland. He's been so poised this week that it's hard to believe this is his first broadcast appearance at a presidential convention. Dwain is presenting WJSU to a national audience."
Doty, the station's news director, is an established writer/producer/reporter and consultant with more than 20 years of broadcast journalism experience. He began his career at "Good Morning America" and has worked at "World News Tonight," NY1 News and Mississippi Public Broadcasting, among other notable outlets.
He has won several Associated Press news awards for his reporting in Mississippi and was a writer on the Emmy Award-winning ABC News special "Diana, Princess of Wales: The Final Farewell."
Doty will begin his broadcast from the DNC at 4 p.m. Monday, July 25, during "The Full Spectrum" - a show that features interviews with key local and national political figures, entertainers and personalities, as well as community forums and human-interest stories.
