NCCU Hosts Free Disaster Preparedness Training

The North Carolina Central University (NCCU)http://www.nccu.edu/ Institute for Homeland Security and Workforce Developmenthttp://www.nccu.edu/Academics/institutesandcenters/hls/index.cfm, in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, will sponsor a free disaster preparedness course Saturday, June 6, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Albert N. Whiting Criminal Justice Building, 608 Nelson Street, on NCCU's campus.

The eight-hour management-level course will train leaders of faith-based community organizations, emergency response personnel and first responders from small and rural communities to engage citizens in disaster planning efforts that are integrated into local and statewide emergency management plans.

Participants will learn ways to mobilize places of worship, congregations and communities in preparation for emergencies and disasters.

"This is a great event for the NCCU Institute for Homeland Security and Workforce Development to host," said Dr. M. Chris Herring, director of the NCCU Institute for Homeland Security and Workforce Development. "Participants will obtain information and learn strategies and tactics that are sure to strengthen the security and safety of the community during a disaster."

The NCCU Institute for Homeland Security and Workforce Development conducts preeminent research and offers quality training for community preparedness. The Institute is dedicated to improving emergency preparedness of organizations through ongoing education. It also serves as a member of the Rural Domestic Preparedness Consortium, which develops and delivers homeland security curricula to rural emergency responders.

U.S. citizens may register for this course at http://bit.ly/NCCUIHSWD. Registration closes on Saturday, May 23. Individuals who are not permanent U.S. citizens who wish to attend must apply individually to the Department of Homeland Security.
