BlueCross BlueShield Series to Feature Robert Bullard

North Carolina Central Universityhttp://www.nccu.edu/ (NCCU) will welcome Dr. Robert Bullard, a leading scholar and advocate of the environmental justice movement, on Tuesday, March 21, 2017, for the spring installment of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Speaker Series. Bullard is the distinguished professor of Urban Planning and Environmental Policy in the Barbara Jordan-Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs at Texas Southern University. The lecture will begin at 7 p.m. and take place in the H.M. Michaux Jr. School of Education Building at 700 Cecil Street in Durham, on the campus of NCCU.

Bullard, who received his Ph.D. degree from Iowa State University, is the author of 18 books that address sustainable development, environmental racism, urban land use, industrial facility siting, community reinvestment, housing, transportation, climate justice, emergency response, smart growth and regional equity. Bullard has testified as an expert witness and served as a technical advisor on hundreds of civil rights lawsuits and public hearings over the past three decades. In 1990, he was the first environmental justice scholar to receive the National Wildlife Federation (NWF) Conservation Achievement Award in Science for "Dumping in Dixie: Race, Class and Environmental Quality." The Sierra Club named its Environmental Justice Award after Bullard in 2014.

Bullard has been featured and quoted by numerous media outlets, including PBS, Huffington Post, NPR and CNN. In 2008, Newsweek named him as one of "13 Environmental Leaders of the Century" and Co-op America honored him with its Building Economic Alternatives Award. In 2010, The Grio named Bullard one of the "100 Black History Makers in the Making," and Planet Harmony named him one of "Ten African-American Green Heroes."

The goal of the speaker series is to engage students, faculty and staff in conversations surrounding health care, technology, business, law and other topics. Previous speakers include renowned infectious diseases expert Dr. Nahid Bhadelia; Brian Reaves, senior vice president for multinational software company SAP SE; Bobby Jefferson of the Center for Development Informatics; Dr. Keith Martin, executive director of the Consortium of Universities for Global Health; IBM Distinguished Engineer, John Medicke; and Dr. Robert Newman, president of the National Humanities Center.
