CCC Foreign Language Education workshop to feature ‘Best in Mississippi’ presenters Professional development opportunity event set Feb. 18

CLARKSDALE : "The Best in Mississippi Foreign Language Education" is no inflated theme for Coahoma Community College’s continuing education workshop to take place here Friday, Feb. 18.

"The majority of the presenters are scholars recognized as "The Best of Mississippi" by the Mississippi Foreign Language Association (MFLA)," explains Joshua Nave, CCC Spanish instructor who is coordinating the event.

"Our keynote speaker, Dr. Aurora Fiengo-Varn, was also recognized as the "Best of SCOLT" by the Southern Conference on Language Teaching in 2009," continues Nave.

Joining Varn, a Spanish professor at Mississippi Valley State University, on the workshop program are Dr. Robert Kahn, senior international consultant at Millsaps College; Dr. Gemma Beckley, Fullbright-Hays program director, Rust College; Janet Bunch, Spanish instructor, Northwest Mississippi Community College; Cheryl Maqueda, Spanish professor, William Carey University; Yohanna Jimenez, president of the Mississippi Foreign Language Association; Nolvia Ventura, Spanish teacher, Presbyterian Christian School; and Laura Hall, Spanish teacher, Tishomingo County High School.

According to Nave, the professional development workshop being sponsored by CCC’s Division of Academic Affairs under the direction of Dr. Rosetta Howard, vice president, is the first in some time to be held in the Delta.

"It’s especially important to have it here because of budget problems restricting travel," he says.

Workshop topics include technology in the foreign language classroom, study abroad opportunities for teachers and students, incorporating Afro-Latino culture in the Spanish classroom, communicative language learning strategies, making foreign language learning fun, and tips for successful world language clubs.

Hours of the workshop are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; a $30 fee is required for participants receiving .6 continuing education credits.

Nave says he anticipates a good turnout at the workshop, and adds, "It is also a great opportunity for networking."

Morning sessions take place on CCC’s main campus with afternoon sessions at the Coahoma County Higher Education Center (Cutrer Mansion).
