Taking Tuskegee to the World - Tuesday, March 28, 1:00 ET, Dana Chandler, Tuskegee University (AL)
Description: Over the past five years, Tuskegee University Archives has diligently worked to bring collections to the attention of researchers and others throughout the world.  The website has had over 750,000 hits during that time, with over forty five percent from abroad.  This has provided the impetus to continue seeking out more and more collections for digitization.  Recent opportunities to highlight materials include the release of important audio files.  In honor of Black History Month, the Tuskegee University Libraries announced the digitization of three tapes which included speeches by Jackie Robinson, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Muhammad Ali. These recordings were transferred from two sides of three 7 inch reel-to-reel tapes preserved in the Tuskegee University Archives' TCA audio collection. These are but a portion of the over one hundred tapes that have already been digitized and made available. Also, due to a recent acquisition, Tuskegee has over 3,800 images from the P.H. Polk Family collection to process and digitize. This webinar will provide an overview of Tuskegee's digitization activities to support teaching and learning.  The webinar will also describe the challenges and impact of this project on the broader community/academic environment.
Take Aways: After this webinar, participants will have gained:

  • Knowledge of Tuskegee University's digitization activities

  • An understanding of the value/importance of digitization to support teaching and learning

  • Strategies to promote your library's digitization projects.

Instructor: Dana Chandler has worked in a variety of capacities within both the private and public sectors.  A trained surveyor, civil engineer and project manager, he has helped to design and build projects throughout the South and nation.  In later years, Chandler had worked specifically with corporations seeking to start up recycling facilities in the U.S. and Latin America.

A trained archivist and historian, receiving his graduate degree from Auburn University. Chandler now works as the University Archivist/Assistant Professor at Tuskegee University. Prior to his tenure, the archives had been closed to use by researchers for several years.  Within two years of his hire, the archives reopened for use by researchers.  This has permitted an influx of researchers from around the world to visit the archives in search of the interesting materials that are held within its collections. During the last eight years, the archives have welcomed over a thousand visitors.
