Subject: Howard University Library System

Howard University Community,
I am pleased to announce that Ms. Carrie Hackney will serve as Interim Director of the Howard University Library System (HULS), effective July 1, and will report to Provost Anthony Wutoh. Ms. Hackney is an accomplished library professional with more than 33 years of academic library experience. She is skilled in maximizing human and material resources in the delivery of dynamic, faculty and student-centered information services.

Currently, the University is re-examining many of its programs and priorities to enhance the academic experience of our students and the research support for our faculty and graduate programs. Part of this re-examination will include a formal review of all the libraries within
Howard University. The evaluation will assist in identifying our priorities preceding the search for a new director of HULS.

Under the direction of the Provost, in mid-July, the University will host a review panel of three external evaluators, all highly regarded librarians and leaders in the field, from around the country. The team will be on campus for two and one-half days, reviewing the library system, its holdings, staff and library administrators for the evaluation phase of the rebuilding process. These types of evaluations provide guidance and direction and are typical among library systems, especially when a library system is in a transition phase.

Mr. James F. Williams, II, Dean of Libraries at the University of Colorado--Boulder; Ms. Paula Kaufman, Professor and former Dean of Libraries and University Librarian, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; and Mr. Scott Seaman, Dean of the Ohio University Libraries, will form the evaluation team.

Upon his retirement, I want to thank Mr. Dodson for his service, expertise and contributions to the Howard University Library System and the Moorland Spingarn Research Center and wish him well in his future endeavors.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation as we move forward in this initiative to enhance our research libraries into facilities that fully and efficiently support our academic research offerings. We ask the University community to give the evaluation team your full cooperation as they visit and tour the campus.

In Truth and Service,
Wayne A. I. Frederick, M.D., MBA
