PVAMU students place second, third in statewide debate tournaments

Seven students from Prairie View A&M University placed second and third in two statewide debate tournaments at Texas State University, Feb. 7-9. Senior Ciara Edwards (mass communication), juniors Chdinma Brown (biology), Chiamaka Okoye (biology), and Treasure Smith (criminal justice), along with first-year students Keishon Groves (mass communication), Alona Henry (political science), and Maia McFarlin (political science) went up against students from Texas A&M, Wiley College, McNeese State, Howard Payne, University of Texas at El Paso, and Mary Hardin-Baylor, to name a few.

The Texas State University Department of Communication Studies and the Texas Intercollegiate Forensics Association (TIFA) hosted the two events, the Spring 2020 TIFA Tournament (known as the first half of the swing) and the Texas State University Invitational (second half of the swing).

"Our students did the best they have ever done at the state championship," said PVAMU Director of Forensics Christopher Medina. "Ultimately, PVAMU was third place overall in the first half of the swing and second place in debate sweepstakes for the entire tournament."

PVAMU's students placed as follows:

  • Chiamaka Okoye - Quarterfinalist in International Public Debate Association (IPDA) Debate, 4th place in After-Dinner Speaking
  • Treasure Smith - Quarterfinalist in IPDA Debate
  • Keishon Groves - 6th place in Duo Interpretation (1st half of the swing), 5th place in Duo (2nd half of the swing), 5th place in Poetry Interpretation
  • Maia McFarlin - 6th place in Duo (1st half of the swing), 5th place in Duo (2nd half of the swing)
