Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies degree approved

The University System of Georgia (USG) Board of Regents (BOR) has authorized Savannah State University (SSU) to offer the Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies (BIS) degree. The new degree, which was approved during the BOR's regular monthly meeting on May 20, 2014, becomes effective immediately.
The BIS degree program provides a method for students to take advantage of the many offerings at the university and customize a program of study that suits their academic goals and career interests. Students who may have accrued credits in other academic areas will be able to take advantage of existing coursework and resources to complete their degrees within a reasonable time frame. While a majority of the classes will be offered on campus, students will be able to take part in the growing online offerings to complete the degree requirements.
Aligned with SSU's academic strategic plan, the Interdisciplinary Studies degree program is consistent with the university's commitment to increase graduation rates and its Complete College Georgia (CCG) plan, which is part of a statewide initiative to increase by 2020 the percentage of Georgians completing college from 42 to 60 percent.
Established in 1890, Savannah State University is the oldest public historically black college or university in Georgia and the oldest institution of higher learning in the city of Savannah. The university's 4,800 students select majors from 26 undergraduate and five graduate programs in three colleges - Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, Business Administration and Sciences and Technology - and the School of Teacher Education.
