$50,000 grant from women’s foundation will support sex education program at JSU
The Jackson State University Undergraduate Studies and CyberLearning Unit received a $50,000 grant from the Women’s Foundation of Mississippi to fund the JSU Bridge to Success: Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program.  This program is designed to address a significant barrier to university student retention and graduation – teen pregnancy.
It will specifically promote strategies to help incoming JSU freshmen in the JSU Bridge to the Future Program avoid situations that can lead to risky sexual behaviors and unwanted pregnancies by incorporating weekly workshops with trainers utilizing the Mississippi Department of Health endorsed Becoming a Responsible Teen (BART) curriculum in an eight-week long summer program. The Project is designed around three goals:
Goal #1: To decrease risky sexual behaviors among male and female adolescents enrolled in the JSU Summer Bridge to the Future Program through assisting them in clarifying their personal values, implementing strategies to reduce risk-taking, and sharing accurate information concerning HIV and other STDs utilizing the BART Curriculum.
Goal #2: Endorse the incorporation of BART workshops into the curriculum and activities of all incoming Jackson State University freshmen.
Goal #3: Increase university retention and graduation rates by working with university officials and stakeholders to create a model for a four-year college/university sexual education program targeting incoming college freshmen.
Dr. Tony Latiker, associate professor of Elementary and Early Childhood Education, and Josie Latham, coordinator of intervention services, are the co-principal investigators on this project.
