Bowie State Accounting Professor Awarded for Excellence in Teaching

(BOWIE, Md.) - An accounting professor, who has dedicated nearly 40 years to preparing Bowie State University students for success, was honored with a statewide award for excellence in teaching. Assistant Professor Joseph Lanciano also leads the accounting program that regularly places graduates in some of the region's top employers.

He received the Doetsch-Hooper Outstanding Teaching Award last month from the Maryland Association of Certified Public Accountants (MACPA)http://www.macpa.org/. The award recognizes his commitment to accounting education, contributions to Bowie State and professional achievements.

Lanciano teaches accounting and auditing to juniors and seniors. He spends much of his time helping students find internships and jobs with private firms and government agencies, such as CohnReznick and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). He also serves as an advisor to the student chapter of the National Association of Black Accountants.

He is inspired to help his students achieve their dreams because many of them are the first in their families to attend college, just as he was. "If I have an opportunity to help them, just as Bowie State helped me by providing me with my first professor job... I think I owe it to them to do my best to help them," he said.

Many of Lanciano's former students look forward to his annual party for accounting graduates, which he has hosted each summer at his home for more than 30 years.

Outside of his work at Bowie State, Lanciano uses his accounting expertise to support community and professional groups. He previously served on the finance committee for the city of Crofton, Md. He is also a longtime member of the MACPA and the Maryland Society of Accountants & Tax Professionals, two of the state's largest professional organizations for accountants.

He holds a Master of Public Administration degree in financial management and accounting from Penn State University and a bachelor's degree from Bloomsburg State University.
