Concordia Community College News January 17, 2014 Tutorial Services, Computer Lab Hidden Treasure for Students Does homework have you swamped? Are tests causing you to feel overwhelmed? Sometimes for students, completing assignments can be tough. But thankfully they don't have to face it alone. Help in everything from English to Math, Biology and History is all offered by Coahoma Community College's tutorial service. The free tutoring service is available to students through the Division of Student Affairs and Support Services. Located in the second floor of the Z.A. Barron Student Union in Ebony Room 2, the lab features several computers and free printing. It's open from 8 a.m. until 9:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., on Friday. Sharon Butler, tutorial service facilitator, said students can receive one-on-one assistance through student volunteers that serve as peer tutors or through use of a web-based tutorial software called Edmentum. "Students can be referred to us by an instructor, counselor or other employees of Coahoma Community College," said Butler. "We accept walk-ins as well." Butler said first-time students are asked to fill out an application and assistance is offered based on needs indicated by the student. Staff members utilize a student-centered approach to accommodate students who prefer to work independently or those who may prefer to work in groups. In addition to the tutorial services, a computer lab is also available as a resource for students to perform research and complete homework. Assistant Tutorial Service Facilitator Patrick Johnson, who oversees the lab in the evening, said the computer lab is a hidden treasure for CCC students. "It's a quiet space for our students with everything they need--homework help, a computer, a printer. ...It's all right here at their fingertips," Johnson said. Johnson also pointed out that the lab offers extended hours and remains open longer than other resources such as the library. According to Butler, the lab currently serves over 200 students each year but has the resources to serve more. "We're trying to encourage even more students to take advantage of this service offered to them. Our lab is available for tutorial services, to perform research, and print papers, all at no cost to the student," Butler said.
