Webinar: Spreading the Word: Expanding Access to Collections at the AUC Woodruff Library -  Wednesday, May 31st, 1:00 ET, Christine Wiseman, Andrea Jackson and Jessica Leming, AUC Woodruff Library (GA)

Description: The Atlanta University Center (AUC) Robert W. Woodruff Library was honored in 2015 to receive a generous grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to broaden access to under-represented humanities collections through a project entitled, Spreading the Word:  Expanding Access to African-American Religious Archival Collections of the Atlanta University Center Robert W. Woodruff Library. The Library's Archives Research Center and Digital Services Unit has been organizing, describing, digitizing and preparing for access fourteen collections of rare materials that document African American religion spanning from the 1880s to the 2000s. The unique collections include varied formats, including correspondence, sermons and speeches, research files, photographs, and audio and video recordings, which document theologians and scholars, as well as Christian and Islamic ideologies.

This webinar will introduce attendees to the selection, importance, and significance of the collections that were chosen for this grant, and how they fit into a successful grant application.  Ms. Andrea Jackson and Mrs. Christine Wiseman will discuss details of the grant application, including choosing the specific grantor and the work planning that was done before applying. Jessica Leming will introduce attendees to the fourteen collections being made available through the grant, and talk about the implementation of the work plan. This work included elements of project management, record keeping, and communication across departments to see the stages of the project though. Finally, Mrs. Leming will show how these collections are being made accessible through enhanced finding aids, digital repositories, social media, and marketing.
Learning outcomes: After this webinar, participants will have gained insight into:

  • Selection strategies to drive important projects to different funding sources

  • Project management activities to digitize large audiovisual-heavy collections

  • Approaches to create access and promote collections through a variety of sources.
