Morehouse College News June 23, 2010 R. Erich Caulfield ’98 Chosen 2010-2011 White House Fellow By Add Seymour, Jr. R. Erich Caulfield, a member of the class of 1998, has been chosen as one of 13 members of the prestigious 2010-11 White House Fellows program. “This year’s White House Fellows are comprised of some of the best and brightest leaders in our country,” said first lady Michelle Obama. “I applaud their unyielding commitment to public service and dedication to serving their community.” Founded in 1964 by President Lyndon B. Johnson, the program offers exceptional young men and women first-hand experience working at the highest levels of the federal government. Fellows typically spend a year working as a full-time, paid Fellow to senior White House staff, cabinet secretaries and other top-ranking government officials. Fellows also participate in an educational program consisting of roundtable discussions with renowned leaders from the private and public sectors, and trips to study U.S. policy in action both domestically and internationally. Selection is highly competitive and based on a record of remarkable early career professional achievement, evidence of leadership potential, a proven commitment to public service, and the knowledge and skills necessary to contribute successfully at the highest levels of the federal government. Caulfield is the chief policy advisor to both Newark, N.J. mayor Cory Booker and the city’s business administrator. The Baton Rouge native is responsible for directing Newark’s federal economic stimulus-related efforts. He also leads the development of Newark’s implementation plan for Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” childhood obesity program. A former member of the Board of Trustees at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.) where he obtained his master’s and doctoral degrees, Caulfield is the only person in M.I.T. history to receive all three of its highest distinctions for leadership and student life contributions. At Morehouse, he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa as a physics and mathematics major. “Erich is another outstanding alumnus,” said Henry Goodgame ’84, director of Alumni Relations, Special Events and Annual Giving. “He was very well prepared and I recall his Exit Interview was one of our best.
