Call for Host Sites: HBCU Library Alliance Preservation Internship (2025-2029)

Dear HBCU Library Alliance Colleagues,

We are excited to announce the launch of the HBCU Library Alliance Preservation Internship Program for 2025-2029. This program aims to introduce undergraduate HBCU student interns to careers in librarianship, with a special focus on preservation, including archives and conservation work. We are seeking host sites to provide hands-on internship experiences for these students alongside a comprehensive virtual curriculum.

Program Goals:

  • Introduce interns to careers in librarianship, emphasizing preservation.

  • Educate interns on the significance of material culture, particularly within HBCU libraries and BIPOC collections in PWIs.

  • Foster a supportive community among participants, supervisors, and instructors.

  • Document intern projects for broad dissemination through an open-access repository.

Program Logistics:

  • Duration: 6 weeks

  • Type: Hybrid (on-site and virtual)

  • Virtual cohort learning via shared core curriculum on preservation concepts

  • On-site, hands-on internship experience exploring primary topics from virtual seminars

  • Virtual orientation and seminars supplemented by on-site work

  • Tool kits provided for interns, funded by the grant

  • Housing, transportation, and stipends provided

Program Curriculum:

  • Virtual seminars on key preservation concepts

  • Alums from previous internship programs leading sessions on networking and career trajectories

  • Final session featuring intern project presentations recorded for open-access sharing

Housing and Transportation:

  • The host institution must provide or financially support local housing in full. This housing must be conveniently located near the institution. If interns must commute to the internship site, reliable public transportation must be available, or the host site must make an equivalent accommodation.

  • Round-trip travel from the intern’s home to the host site will be covered by the grant.

  • The grant will provide a stipend of $6,000 for each intern. (Host institutions that can contribute a partial or total amount of this stipend should specify this so it can be considered in the grant budget.)
