ASU Hosts Community Pottery Event to Help Feed Hungry
By Hazel Scott

Alabama State University's Department of Visual Arts is preparing to host a community event titled Empty Bowls that will raise money for the Montgomery Area Food Bank.

Experienced potters in the River Region are invited to participate in this event on Saturday, September 7, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at ASU's Tullibody Fine Arts Building, Room 136.

The event is free and open to the public.

How does it work?
Potters who know how to throw bowls on the potter's wheels will create handcrafted ceramic bowls, which will later be glazed and fired in a kiln at ASU.

The bowls will then be collected and used next spring for Soup Day, an event where patrons purchase a bowl of their choice and enjoy a variety of soups provided by the Montgomery Area Food Bank in exchange for their donation. The money raised will benefit the Food Bank's ongoing efforts to curb hunger in the Montgomery area.

Stephen Cappelli, chair of the Department of Visual Arts, said the event helps to direct awareness of the problem of hunger in our community.

"The bowls are a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world," Cappelli said. "The Empty Bowls event is a way of giving local artists a chance to make art in the spirit of giving someone enough to eat."
