Dr. Clarissa West-White attends the POWRR Institute

Dr. Clarissa West-White, a Reference Librarian/Instructor in the Carl S. Swisher Library, attended the Preserving Digital Objects With Restricted Resources (POWRR) Institute in Naperville, Illinois on April 18-19, 2019. The POWRR Institute is funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and its purpose is to enhance the skills of librarians and archivists at small and mid-sized institutions.

Sessions focused on the curation and preservation of digital collections including storage and retrieval of data, workflow plans, web archiving, case studies, and technical skills. West-White says that a recent contest confirmed the importance of digitizing as much of the University's collective past, present and future as possible.

"Living in a state riddled by hurricanes makes the safeguarding of - not only the prized artifacts of the school's founder a priority- but other printed materials and recordings as well," said West-White.

Participants were provided hands-on technical training, engagement with institutional case studies, one-on-one consultation with expert practitioners drawn from the digital preservation field, and the opportunity to form communities of practice that will continue.
