The Albany State University Library is a partner in the University System of Georgia GALILEO Knowledge Repository. The GALILEO Knowledge Repository (GKR) project has received an $857,000 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) to initiate a cooperative institutional repository (IR) service and model for USG institutions that are managing and providing access to their campus' digital scholarship, research information, and related works. The GKR will include a metadata repository for federated searching and browsing across these institutions' repositories for the citizens of Georgia and the scholarly community at large.
The initial IMLS grant partners are: Albany State University, College of Coastal Georgia, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Georgia Tech, Medical College of Georgia, North Georgia College and State University, Valdosta State, and the University of Georgia. The IMLS grant is providing funds for this initial set of University System of Georgia colleges and universities.
Dr. LaVerne L. McLaughlin, Albany State's Director of Library Services, is a member of the project team and the GKR Steering Committee. As an integral part of the GKR, the project team will conduct a future survey of selected faculty from the USG institutions participating in the GKR grant. The grant is certainly a bright spot in Georgia when reductions are happening with other budgets and a testament to the persistence of the GKR project team. This project is a milestone for the University System of Georgia institutions.
