CCC Faculty and Staff undergo EEO Lecture/Training
In an effort to ensure that Coahoma Community College (CCC) maintains a safe and comfortable working environment an Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) and Free Speech Training was held January 9, 2018, on its Clarksdale campus.
Equal Employment Opportunity is freedom from discrimination on the basis of protected classes such as race, color, sex, national origin, religion, age, disability or genetic information. EEO rights are guaranteed by both federal and state fair employment laws and are enforced by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and its state counterparts.
Attorney Steven A. Brandon conducted the training and stressed the importance of speaking out and having an active voice in addressing issues of harassment.
"For EEO to work properly both CCC and its employee's must take these matters seriously and be proactive in addressing them," said Brandon. "CCC has a great group of individuals working here, let's continue on this path."
On May 15, 2002, President George W. Bush signed the Notification and Federal Employee Anti- Discrimination and Retaliation Act (No FEAR Act), which increases federal agency accountability for acts of discrimination or reprisal against employees.
A requirement of the No FEAR Act is that a federal agency post on their websites specific summary statistical data relating to equal employment opportunity (EEO) complaints filed against the respective agency.
Coahoma Community College president, Dr. Valmadge Towner, is glad the campus community had the opportunity to learn and grow as a collective.
"This is a subject area that I have wanted to address since I assumed the role of president here at CCC. If one of our own is affected, we all are affected," said Towner. "We want to ensure that all of our students, faculty and staff members can work and learn in a safe and comfortable environment."
Equal employment practices are essential for both individuals and organizations. On an individual basis, EEO laws accomplish many things and promote a comfortable working environment for all.
All Coahoma Community College employees are encouraged to contact Michael Houston, director of employee services, regarding any EEO related questions and concerns at (662) 621-4853 or mhouston@coahomacc.edu.
