Bowie State University News October 31, 2018 Proctor Lecture Series Highlights Impact of Educators Annual Lecture Provides Opportunity to Support Future Educators Local educational leaders will address contemporary issues in the field and share their career journeys on Nov. 13 at the second annual James E. Proctor Jr. Lecture Series at Bowie State University, celebrating American Education Week and the tremendous impact of educators in our communities. Hosted by the College of Education<https://www.bowiestate.edu/academics-research/colleges/college-of-education/> in the James E. Proctor Jr. Building, Room 102, the lecture is named in honor of the late Maryland Delegate Proctor ('69, '72), who spent more than 30 years as an educator and principal in Prince George's County Public Schools. He dedicated his service as an elected official to improving the lives of all Marylanders through education. The campus building named in his honor houses the College of Education. The lecture brings together a community of experienced educators, practitioners and aspiring teachers to explore the many challenges related to recruitment, retention and attrition. This year's theme focuses on public education as a basic right, highlighting administrators who work to ensure that all students receive a quality education. Because of historic teacher shortages throughout nation, the lecture provides a relevant and timely forum to promote the contributions of the profession to the larger society and encourage more students to become educators. The panel speakers bring a diverse background of experience and knowledge: Douglas Tyson, assistant superintendent for the Fairfax County Public Schools; Christine Handy, president of the National Association of Secondary School Principals, and Gwendolyn J. Mason, associate superintendent for special education & student services for the Prince George's County Public Schools. In addition to providing a platform to discuss issues in education, the lecture is also an opportunity to support future educators through the James E. The scholarship makes it possible for deserving BSU students to reach their dream of careers in education. The Proctor Lecture Series connects the Bowie State community with local and regional educators to ensure that the university continues to create pathways for students to enter the profession.
