SGA to Host HBCU Political Action Summit and Public Forum February 11-14
With a focus on increasing the sustainability of the eleven Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in North Carolina, the Student Government Association at Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) is hosting a Political Action Summit February 11-14 that will feature a panel presentation that will be free and open to the public.

The panel presentation will be on Thursday, February 12, at 9:00 a.m. in the Campus Hall of the Donald Julian Reaves Student Activities Center and include Dr. Melissa Harris-Perry, politics professor and executive director of the Pro Humanitate Institute at Wake Forest University, Dr. Corey D. B. Walker, dean of the College of Arts, Sciences, Business and Education at WSSU, Ayana D. Hernandez, associate vice chancellor for University Relations at North Carolina Central University, and Douglas A. Wilson, former political director for the N. C. Democratic Party.  The presentation will focus on funding models for HBCUs and include topics such as state and federal appropriations, recruitment and enrollment of students, and program support.

"We wanted to bring together representatives from all of the HBCUs in the state to discuss what we, as students, can do to support the sustainability of these institutions that mean so much to our state," said Olivia Sedwick, president of WSSU's Student Government Association.  "By providing our students with the information they need to be advocates for HBCUs, we believe we can impact the future of our schools."

Included in the sessions for students will be presentations on the local and statewide impact of North Carolina's HBCUs, advocacy training and a trip to Raleigh to talk with state legislators.  Young Invincibles and the UNC Association of Student Governments are sponsors for the summit.
